The Effect of Cable Size on Ethernet Cable Speeds

The Cat5 cable became the standard choice for networking during the late 1990s. This cable type carries information at a top speed of 100 Mbs and has a maximum frequency of 100 MHz. The CAT5 has a dramatically increased range of power and data transmission over its predecessor, the CAT3. CAT5 cables operate effectively at distances up to 100 meters.
Cat5e Cable

CAT5E Cables are the standard Ethernet cables used in homes and offices. CAT5 and CAT5e cables share many similarities. Both support a maximum frequency of 100 MHz. However, while the CAT5 uses two pairs of copper wires, the CAT5e uses four copper pairs. This modification allows the CAT5e cable to carry information up to 1 Gbps. As a result of this improvement, CAT5e cables transmit video information effectively.
CAT6 Cable

This higher-end cable is used primarily for high-capacity networking. Like the CAT5 versions, the Cat6 supports four copper wire pairs to transmit information. However, the CAT6 offers a vastly superior service. This version delivers a massive 10 Gbps load and supports a maximum frequency of 250 MHz. These impressive qualities make the CAT6 a better cable product than its predecessors.

Ethernet cables provide an invaluable way to securely transmit information across a small area. Though a larger Ethernet cable size carries a larger information load, most users and home networks only require a CAT5 or CAT5e type.
